What is technology?Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools and crafts. It's the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. Technology has the power to deliver learning in a variety of ways. Technology can deliver learning in a way that is enjoyable, and every learner will have a unique learning experience. Education technology empowers the learner.
In the classroom, there are numerous uses of technology -- both by teachers and students -- for all of the content areas. The hard part is narrowing down topics for a short presentation. In our Wiki, we have only skimmed the surface of possible uses of technology. For instance, the number of websites that could be used is virtually unlimited; as a group, we have simply included some of our favorites below. Also, keep in mind that there are numerous types of technology, and that most types of technology are not limited to one subject area. Video cameras or podcasting -- or even websites such as Brain Pop -- could be used in any content area.
Educational technology (also called learning technology) is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. The term educational technology is often associated with, and encompasses, instructional theory and learning theory. While instructional technology covers the processes and systems of learning and instruction, educational technology includes other systems used in the process of developing human capability. Educational Technology includes, but is not limited to, software, hardware, as well as Internet applications and activities.
Another form of educational technology is Web 2.0. The term "Web 2.0" is commonly associated with web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing and collaboration (such as Wiki Spaces) on the Internet. Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, sites like googleearth.com, web applications, social networking sites, video sharing sites (youtube), blogs, and folksonomies. A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them. -Kathleen
Technology is also an essential tool for the development of students as a whole in the classroom. It is very much needed and should be incorporated in the classroom as often as possible. It can serve as a bridging gap to allow students and teachers to make connections between content areas. When we think of technology we tend to instantly think of computers and the use of the internet; however there are many types of technology that are just as useful. We can still use the radio, CD player, and even cassette players just to name a few. We can expose students to a world of technology just by taking advantage of the resources that are made available in the classroom.
Here are two Youtube videos about technology and how we can integrate it more in our classrooms. Students use technology so often in their personal lives, why can't we make it so they can use it in their education? -Kathleen

Interactive Technology
What is a Smart Board?
A Smart-Board is made up of a computer, Smart-Board software, an interactive whiteboard and a projector. The Smart Board interactive whiteboard system is made up of a computer with the Smart Board software, a projector and the Smart Board interactive whiteboard itself. “With a touch of a finger, students can control applications; navigate the Internet; and write, change, move around and save content” (Sani, 2007). The whiteboard is a touch screen and when learning with a Smart-Board students are engaged and listening instead of taking notes. A Smart-Board can be used to enhance all subject areas especially math.
Interactive websites are always fun for students. They enhance student learning within the classroom and continue to help build on understanding. However, with the variety of technology available today, it is also important for teachers to integrate hands-on items. Some of these technologies are listed above, such as calculators, i-pods, microscopes, etc... The website, Learning Resources ( www.learningresources.com ) is a great site for both parents and teachers to browse through countless interactive educational games, available for purchase. The great thing about this site is that the search options allows you to look for games in specific categories, whether it is a particular theme, grade level or subject matter. There are even games for English Language Learners and Special Needs students!
Here is a brief description of a few games....
Hot Dots: A box of self checking question cards that are aligned to national and state curriculum. The student reads the content on one side of the card and flips over to answer multiple choice questions. The student select the answer with the Hot Dot pen, which then shouts, "You got it!" for a right answer, or "Incorrect," for the wrong answer.
Teaching Cash register: This interactive register holds actual size money, and comes with play coins to help students practice coin recognition. It has four interactive games with a built in scanner, scale and coin slot. Some registers even come with a built in calculator!
Tetra Trax: This interactive jigsaw puzzle is listed under both Visual and Fine Motor skills for the special needs students who needs help in these areas, while working on mathematical thinking skills.
GeoSafari Talking Globe: This talking globe comes with over 10,000 quiz questions, with varying levels of difficulty. It challenges the student on geography, world culture and even has automatic scoring!
